New Edinburgh Trams (ii)

The New Trams for Edinburgh

This page provides brief updates of the progress of the Edinburgh Tram. The previous page provides detailed information on the legal framework, planning, consultation and the pre- construction phases. Many photographs on these pages show the various items described. The other pages have photographs of the old trams running where the new ones will be, and also photographs of the mock-up of the tram vehicle on public display.

More photographs will be added as time permits

April 2010

Work is due to continue along the length of the route from Carrick Knowe to Haymarket. The viaduct at Haymarket railway Station is nearing completion but no sign of work at Roseburn is evident as the walls for the new structures cannot easily be seen from the road way. The Depot now has a completed roof and will house the tram fleet later this year.

March 2010

The bridge at Edinburgh Park railway station now has evidence of track laying. The length of track along the redundant guided is progressing well. The new bridge at Carrick Knowe is nearing completion.

January 2010

Work is progressing around the tram line with utility diversions on going.

December 2009

Work on Princes Street has been suspended. Temporary repairs have been completed to allow buses and taxis to operate. It seems some cyclists are unable to appreciate what happens when they cycle in the grove of a tram rail and TIE are to help educate them!

October 2009

130,000 visitors have been to see the Edinburgh Tram Mock Up. It is now being promoted outside the Caledonian Hotel in Princes Street / Lothian Road at the West End. Its next moved will be to the Gyle Shopping Centre.

August 2009

Work for the building at the Airport is ongoing - and despite the best efforts of the taxi trade in Edinburgh, yet another reassurance has been made by the Tram proposers that the Tram will go to the Airport. The terminal will be where the buses currently park when picking up and dropping off passengers.

July 2009

Work for the diversion of the utilities at the Depot site has taken longer than expected. With the design changed to allow an interchange at this site with the railway line this part is slightly delayed.

June 2009

The Tram Mock Up has now been moved to Ocean Terminal shopping centre in Leith Docks.

May 2009

Tram mock up moved to Constitution Street in Leith.

Tenders have been requested for work at Edinburgh Airport.

Tram received 74,000 visitors when on display in Princes Street.

April 2009

The mock up of the Tram in Princes Street has proved so popular that it is to remain for a further period.

Laying of the first part of the track is expected on Princes Street. (photo's will be posted when available so please check back).

March 2009

Work is proceeding well in all areas of the route.

February 2009

Some legal contractural items are in discussion with TIE and the contractors.

The unveiling of the mock up tram currently at LRT’s Central Garage expected later this month on the 23rd.

TIE representative to talk to LRTA in Edinburgh on Friday 27th February at usual meeting place. Please contact LRTA for details.

January 2009

The stops have been announced as – City Centre

Haymarket Terrace (this is a short piece of road outside the current Haymarket Railway Station level with the car park); Shandwick Place (which will become a day time public transport only corridor, with deliveries allowed for the shops during off peak night times. Most of the shops have access from a lane at the rear); Princes Street (between Hanover Street and Fredrick Street); St Andrew Square / Brought Street; then McDonald Road (at Balfour Street); and Constitution Street (south i.e. Docks end).

A mock up of a prototype tram has been delivered and is expected to go on public display early 2009. It is currently stored in LRT bus garage. (See photos below)

Work recommences after the December / January close down at Constitution Street on 23rd ; kerb re-alignment on going in Shandwick Place; Jane Street in Leith closed at junction with Leith Walk to allow utility diversions;

Track laying will commence early this year 2009, with the likely first section being laid in Princes Street.

Princes Street at the Mound to close from 25th January to allow utility diversions. It will reopen for a short period then close for the next 6-8 months.

December 2008

The majority of the street works are suspended for December after consultation with local traders.

Phases 2 of the works for the underpass at the A8 Gogar Roundabout on the West of the city are continuing.

A mock up of the Edinburgh Tram arrived and is on display for local interest groups.

November 2008

VAE the Austrian subcontractor delivered the first section of rail. These are being stored in Leith pending track laying which will commence early in 2009.

October 2008

A series of Public Consultation Exhibitions opened. These detail the plans for areas to be served by the new Tramway.

23 & 25 September West End; 30 September & 2 October Leith Walk; 6 & 13 October City Centre; 16 October Leith.

September 2008

Phase 1 of the A8 works commenced. A single lane road closure is necessary eastbound to allow works to proceed constructing the underpass of the A8 from the Gyle shopping Centre to the new Tram Depot and onwards to the Airport.

Work is ongoing in St Andrew Square, the Mound, Haymarket (utility diversions), Edinburgh Airport (trial holes), Balgreen Road (new access road and closure of footway beside Golf Course), Haymarket (base for the new viaduct in car park), Russell Road (clearing the area for the new bridge), a retaining wall at the Gyle, utility diversions along the length of Leith Walk, and other works...
