Brussels Trip
This year’s Society tour was to Brussels and also included trips to Ghent and Antwerp. It was organised as usual by Hugh McAulay, but this year Hugh was in hospital at the time so the tour guide was Douglas Boyle.
The tour began on 17th June when we left our very central hotel on a tram tour to our evening meal at Ixelles. The following day the party visited Gand (Ghent), an interesting city with canals and old buildings. The Grand system is metre-gauge and a mixture of PCC and ‘Hermelijn’ cars.

Friday 19th was the day of the visit to Antwerp, the second largest port in Europe. The first thing that strikes you in Antwerp is Centraal Station, a very grand structure. The Antwerp tram museum at Berchem is housed in an old tram depot and has a large collection of vehicles.
The Tour Party at Antwerp Museum:
(on platform) Douglas Scoular, Richard McGilvray; (standing) John Senior, Carolyn Senior, Murdoch Currie, Denys Owen, Ross Scoular, Frank Mitchell; (on step)Douglas Boyle. On the Sunday morning we boarded a restored 1935 Peter Witt car for a comprehensive circular tour of the city.

The whole Brussels tour was excellently organised to the last detail by Hugh and it was so unfortunate that he was unable to come on his trip!
